China's Communist Party has been left stunned by the downfall of one of its rising stars, just months ahead of a national leadership shake-up.

Last week, Sun Zhengcai was abruptly dismissed on Saturday and placed under investigation for “disciple violations”.

The senior official was considered a contender for promotion at the party’s congress in autumn and as a possible future premier.
