Republicans in the US Senate are defending President Donald Trump's decision to sack FBI Director James Comey.

But the outcry from minority Democrats is growing louder for a special prosecutor to investigate potential Russian interference in last year's election.

Democrats say since Comey was overseeing the investigation, his removal suggests a White House cover-up.
