Thick fumes pump from powerful engines as 12 nations compete in tank biathlon world championships in Russia, crossing rivers and bridges and shooting at targets.

This year's friendly tank rivalry includes former Cold War friends and foes, although no NATO countries are participating as Russia is at odds with the West over the crisis in Ukraine.
