Italy is calling on the European Union to do more to stop thousands of asylum seekers from making the journey from North Africa. 

Many hundreds drown every year as they try to get to places like Sicily, seeing Italy as the gateway to Europe.

Al Jazeera's Claudio Lavanga reports Catania, Sicily.
