A detective agency in the Spanish region of Catalonia is at the centre of a spying scandal involving Colombian pop star Shakira, Barcelona FC and leading politicians and businessmen.

Police raided last week the offices of the agency, Metodo Tres, and are understood to have seized about 20,000 files on businessmen and politicians.

The head of Metodo Tres and three detectives have been arrested.

Former employees say Barcelona FC hired the agency to spy on its defender Gerard Pique and Shakira, and also on senior political figures including Alicia Sanchez-Camacho, the local leader of Spain's ruling party.

Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Barcelona.
