The Roman Catholic Church is now headed by a care-taker leader, after Benedict XVI's reign as pope came to an end.

Somewhat symbolically, Swiss Guards closed the doors of the Papal summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, as the 85-year-old's resignation came into effect.
