Rebels challenge Myanmar government

Armed insurgents sound off warning that violence will intensify unless dialogue begins with ethnic groups.

Myanmar’s main military-backed party has claimed an overwhelming victory in the recently-concluded general elections in November. Critics and the West say the vote was neither free nor fair.

Now, one of Myanmar’s largest rebel groups says fighting will escalate if the new government fails to start talks with major ethnic groups.

The group is conducting drills for new recruits as part of training for what could be an offensive in the name of statehood.
