CIA accused of misleading US on torture

Senate report, says torture programmes contributed almost nothing to US war against al-Qaeda.

Details are emerging from a confidential report by the US Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Bush-era torture programmes.

The report has concluded the CIA misled the US government about the scale of its abuse of prisoners and overstated intelligence gleaned from sessions with senior al-Qaeda figures.

The CIA is refusing to comment on the allegations.
