US debates ‘designer babies’ ethics

Government agency may allow mitochondrial manipulation method that could free babies from certain birth defects.

The Food and Drug Administration of the United States is hearing testimony about whether it should allow so-called designer babies.

The procedure involves using genetic material from three people to make sure the baby is free of certain birth defects.
