Botswana’s Montsho fails doping test
Former Commonwealth champion Amantle Montsho becomes the second athlete to submit a positive drugs test.
A former 400m world champion has become the second Commonwealth Games athlete to fail a doping test in Glasgow.
Amantle Montsho of Botswana tested positive for the banned stimulant bmethylhexaneamine after surrendering her Commonwealth title by coming fourth in the women’s 400m final.
The Commonwealth Games Federation announced that Montsho had been suspended at a hearing in Glasgow. Montsho requested that her backup sample be tested, which will happen on Monday in London.
The 31-year-old Montsho won her world title in 2011 but had to settle for silver at last year’s championships in Moscow. She finished fourth in the final at the 2012 London Olympics.
The CGF announcement came a day after 16-year-old weightlifter Chika Amalaha was stripped of her gold medal after a doping hearing.
The Nigerian tested positive for diuretics and masking agents after winning the 53kg division last Friday, becoming the youngest female to win a weightlifting title at a Commonwealth Games.
There were four failed doping tests at the games four years ago in New Delhi.
First female boxing champion
Elsewhere Nicola Adams become the first female Commonwealth Games boxing champion.
The 31-year-old Adams from England beat Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh in the four-round flyweight contest via a split decision.
“Again I’ve managed to create history,” Adams said. “It’s on to Rio (2016 Olympics). It’s the next step. I’ve been thinking of this since the London 2012 Olympics. To think I’ve finally got it is unbelievable.”
It was England’s 50th gold in Glasgow, where the team is on course to finish top of the medal standings for the first time since 1986 and end Australia’s 20-year Commonwealth dominance.
