Pittsburgh pinch-hitter Ike Davis launched a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning that lifted the Pirates to a vital 5-2 win over St Louis and boosted their fragile playoff hopes.
The win kept the Pirates within 1-1/2 games of the last wild-card berth and moved them within five games of the National League Central lead.
Elsewhere, Carlos Ruiz drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 4-3.
Second baseman Freddy Galvis and first baseman Darin Ruf homered for Philadelphia.
Juan Lagares hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fourth inning as the New York Mets edged the Atlanta Braves 4-3.
