Delap's throws are deadly [GALLO/GETTY]
An incredible afternoon in the English Premier League saw 28 goals fly past hapless keepers in results that could have a huge impact on the title race – and the battle to avoid relegation.

Rory Delap's rocket throw-ins saw promoted Stoke City go 2-0 up against title-chasing Arsenal, with Ricardo Fuller and Seyi Olofinjana scoring from Delap's long-range slings.

The Londoners had Robin van Persie sent off and could manage only a late consolation through Gael Clichy.

It follows a late draw at home to Spurs in midweek and a recent home defeat to Hull City to leave Arsene Wenger's Arsenal six points off the top of the table.

Full English

"People who love the traditional English game must be very happy because they got what they like," Wenger said.

"It was a traditional English game with a lot of fight and commitment on one side and Stoke deserved to win the game."

Stoke, who rose from 17th place to 12th with 13 points, again had Delap to thank for essentially turning throw-ins into wide free kicks.

"If I throw the perfect ball, with the height and quality in our team, I think it is undefendable and that has been proven," Delap said.

"There's no secret to it, everyone knows we do it and it's working well for us."

Reds go down at Lane

Liverpool suffered their first league defeat of the season when Roman Pavlyuchenko scored in injury time to give Tottenham Hotspur a 2-1 comeback win to complete a dream first week for new coach Harry Redknapp.

The Reds were cruising after an early goal by Dirk Kuyt before a Jamie Carragher own goal on 69 minutes opened the door at White Hart Lane.

Spurs, who scored twice in the last few minutes to draw 4-4 at Arsenal on Wednesday after beating Bolton Wanderers last week, seized their chance as the clock ticked down.

The win continued Spurs' transformation since Harry Redknapp replaced Juande Ramos as manager last weekend, and moved the team off the bottom of the standings.

It also gave Liverpool their first loss of the season and dropped the Reds from first to second, making Chelsea the new league leaders.

Tottenham have two wins and a draw during Redknapp's time in charge.

"I've made them believe in themselves a bit," Redknapp said.

"We've had a great week but it's going to be tough. We've got some good players but getting the blend right is the problem.

"Seven points has been a fantastic return from some tough games."

Hull peg back champs

Hull continued their amazing start to life in the top flight, going down 4-1 at Old Trafford before pegging Manchester United back to 4-3 and leaving the champions hanging on for the points at the end.

Two goals for Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to have Manchester United in control as Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic also scored.

But the team who were bottom of the Football League 10 years ago fought back admirably through Daniel Cousin, Bernard Mendy and Geovanni to leave the champions hanging on at full time.

"Not many teams will come to Old Trafford, score three goals and come away with nothing," said Hull manager Phil Brown.

"He (Alex Ferguson) put his big guns out today and that shows the kind of respect that Hull City deserve now."

Zaki on target

Wigan Athletic led for most of the match at Fratton Park through EPL top-scorer Amr Zaki before Tony Adams looked to have salvaged his first point as Portsmouth boss with a late Niko Kranjcar leveller.

But Emile Heskey struck in the dying seconds to end Wigan's run of four consecutive defeats and bag his 100th league goal.

West Ham ended their own four-match run of defeats with a draw at Middlesbrough, while Chelsea smashed Sunderland 5-0 to go top of the league.

Nicolas Anelka scored a hat-trick for Chelsea, while Frank Lampard also grabbed his 100th league goal.

West Bromwich Albion drew 2-2 with Blackburn, who had goalscorer Benni McCarthy sent off, while Louis Saha scored a late winner for Everton against Fulham in the early kickoff.
