Newly promoted Hull scored twice in the second half to beat glamour side Arsenal 2-1 in the English Premier League as the Tigers continued to defy critics that had marked them down as cannon fodder at the start of the season.

It was the first home defeat for Arsenal since losing 1-0 to West Ham on July 4, 2007, and only its second loss at Emirates stadium since the team moved from Highbury in 2006.

Arsenal took the lead in the 51st minute when Theo Walcott weaved into the area with excellent control and passed to Emmanuel Adebayor, whose flick to Cesc Fabregas saw the ball come off Hull defender Paul McShane into the goal.

But Hull recovered from the setback to equalise 11 minutes later when midfielder Geovanni struck a powerful 30-metre shot past goalkeeper Manuel Almunia.

Former Ranger's striker Daniel Cousin then etched his name into the club's history books when he scored what was to be the match winner in the 66th with a header from an in-swinging corner.

Hull's goals were the first scored by an opposing team at Emirates since Arsenal beat Reading 2-1 on April 19.

Arsenal's second defeat this season took it from first to fourth in the standings with 12 points, just one more than Hull.

It has been more than 20 years since the sides last met, when Arsenal won 5-1 on aggregate in the second round of the League Cup in 1988.

The last time the two clubs were in the same division was in the second tier during World War I.

Their last prior league match was when Hull beat Arsenal 1-0 in April 1915, a few weeks before football was suspended because of the war.

Torres double downs Everton

Earlier, Spain striker Fernando Torres recovered his scoring form with two goals in four minutes as Liverpool beat Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The victory put Liverpool on top of the Premier League with 14 points from six matches – before Chelsea overleapt them on goal difference with a 2-0 victory at Stoke.

Manchester United beat Bolton 2-0 after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a controversial penalty, while Newcastle United’s woes continued with a 2-1 defeat at home to Blackburn.

Aston Villa maintained their superb start with a 2-1 home win against Sunderland, Middlesbrough succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat by promoted West Brom, and West Ham beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

Tough on Tim

Everton's misery was compounded on Saturday when Tim Cahill was sent off 10 minutes from time for a second yellow card - the 17th player to be sent off in the last 33 Merseyside derbies.

Torres, who had not scored on his last six appearances for Liverpool, ended his famine after 59 minutes when he was left unmarked in the Everton box and volleyed home a perfect cross from Robbie Keane.

Four minutes later Keane played in Dirk Kuyt, whose shot was thwarted by an interception by Phil Jagielka but the ball bounced kindly for Torres who lashed it high into the net again, giving goalkeeper Tim Howard no chance.

Torres thought he had scored a hat-trick three minutes later when he chested down a cross and shot into the far corner, but referee Mike Riley had already blown for a foul by Kuyt.

Everton, who rarely looked like scoring, have now lost all three of their opening home league matches following earlier defeats to Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth.

Liverpool in contrast, maintained their unbeaten start to the season after 10 matches in all competitions.

Penalty debate

Rooney and Ronaldo were both on the scoresheet at Old Trafford [GALLO/GETTY]
Cristiano Ronaldo put Manchester United ahead at Old Trafford after they were awarded a highly debatable penalty by referee Rob Styles after 60 minutes.

Ronaldo lost the ball in a tackle by Jlloyd Samuel and, although he tumbled over in the process, he did not appeal for a penalty and looked astonished when it was given.

Wayne Rooney came off the bench to score United's second after 77 minutes and seal only their second league win of the season.

Bosingwa when you're winning

Chelsea, unbeaten in the league during 2008, maintained that impressive record with a 2-0 win at Stoke, where full back Jose Bosingwa put them ahead after 39 minutes with his first goal for the club.

He connected with a Frank Lampard ball played over the defence and cracked his shot goalwards, taking a deflection off Andy Griffin.

Florent Malouda hit the post for Chelsea early in the second half before Nicolas Anelka sealed the points with a second 14 minutes from time at the Britannia Stadium.

Dark clouds on Tyneside

Newcastle United crashed to a fifth successive defeat in all competitions after losing 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers at St James' Park in front of newly-appointed interim manager Joe Kinnear, who watched the match from the stands.

Christopher Samba put Blackburn ahead after 32 minutes when he launched himself at a cross from Carlos Villanueva and headed powerfully in.

Blackburn doubled their lead four minutes before half-time when Roque Santa Cruz connected with a cross from Brett Emerton and headed downwards into the net.

Michael Owen put Newcastle back into contention with a 51st-minute penalty after he was brought down by defender Ryan Nelsen.

But the England striker was to end on the losing side again as United's problems continue to mount.

Boro misery

Middlesbrough peppered the West Bromwich Albion goal but went down to a disappointing defeat to the Premier League new boys at the Riverside.

Both teams went close to scoring late in the first half when Jonas Olsson had a header saved by Boro goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, while Afonso Alves saw a header cleared off the line at the other end.

Olsson then had an attempt that counted when Turnbull flapped at a corner, Sherjill MacDonald turned the ball back and Olsson scored after 53 minutes.

Boro had countless chances to grab an equaliser but WBA held on for their first away win since they were promoted.

Cottage cheers for Hammers

It all happened just before half-time at Craven Cottage, where West Ham scored twice in four minutes and Fulham had Andy Johnson sent off.

Fulham, who have not beaten West Ham at home in a league match since 1966, had the better of the first half but conceded two goals in two minutes to Carlton Cole and Matthew Etherington.

Johnson was sent off for a second yellow for a late challenge on Lucas Neill in first-half stoppage time.

Neill was then adjudged to have handled and Danny Murphy scored from the spot for Fulham in the second half.
