Arsenal salvaged a late point at Dinamo Kiev in Group G, while Porto comfortably beat Fenerbahce at home.
Veteran striker Alessandro Del Piero secured the points for Juventus on their return to Champions League action in Group H, as Real Madrid cruised past newcomers BATE Borisov.
Gallas at the last
France defender William Gallas scored two minutes from time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Arsenal against Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday.
Gallas, who scored in both legs in the final qualifying round, converted from close range at the far post after Theo Walcott's low cross into the danger area had taken two deflections.
"We feel like we lost two points," Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said.
"It was a big frustration, but a great relief at the same time because we scored a goal just two minutes from the end."
Kiev, who lost all six group games in the competition last season, had looked set for an opening Group G victory after Guinea striker Ismael Bangoura scored a 64th-minute penalty.
Bangoura easily beat keeper Manuel Almunia after Bacary Sagna had tussled with Ognjen Vukojevic.
Kiev threatened again soon after the break when Almunia saved low down from Roman Eremenko and the Ukraine side went ahead after Sagna was harshly penalised for tangling with Vukojevic.
"If someone had told me before the game that we would get a point, I would have been satisfied," Dynamo coach Yuri Syomin said.

Alessandro Del Piero scored with a longe-range swerving free kick to give Juventus a 1-0 home win over UEFA Cup champions Zenit St Petersburg on their return to the Champions League group stages.
The 33-year-old captain, who played in the final when the Turin club won the second of their two European Cups in 1996, netted on 76 minutes in their Group H opener.
Juve, back in the group stages after missing out in the last two seasons following their domestic demotion for match-fixing, made hard work of the win against the Champions League debutants.
"At the start we had some problems and we were a bit afraid," Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon told Rai television.
"It is a victory with a special taste as we and the fans have waited a long time."
The Russian champions worried the Serie A side for long periods but Andrei Arshavin, one of the standout players of Euro 2008, failed to inspire them sufficiently with Buffon making a neat save from the playmaker.
Real brush past BATE

Newcomers BATE Borisov got away lightly with a 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in their Champions League debut in Group H.
Sergio Ramos gave the nine-times European champions an early lead and they threatened an avalanche of goals but BATE held firm until early in the second half.
Ruud van Nistelrooy doubled the advantage with his 54th goal in the competition and any thoughts of a fightback by the team from Belarus effectively disappeared when defender Anri Khagush was sent off soon after.
BATE battled away but the gulf in class was clear and only Real's profligacy in front of goal and a string of saves from Sergei Veremko prevented a heavier defeat.
The Belarus champions started very nervously and the home side took full advantage, slicing them open at will in the opening minutes.
It was surprising it took until the 11th minute before Real took the lead with a neat corner move.
The ball was played low to the edge of the area for Guti who quickly found an unmarked Ramos at the far post, and the Spain full back sidefooted home.
Real's Bernd Schuster appeared the more anxious of the two coaches, regularly stalking the technical area up to half time, though BATE's threat was restricted to long-range shots and the occasional freekick.
After the break, Real showed a greater urgency and the second goal came when Raul fired goalwards and Veremko saved point blank.
The ball rebounded off one of his defenders and Dutch striker Van Nistelrooy tapped in the loose ball.
Soon after, BATE lost Khagush when he collected his second yellow card for another foul on Arjen Robben, who had given him a torrid time all night.
Argentines on fire for Porto
Two goals in two minutes from Argentines Lisandro Lopez and Lucho Gonzalez helped Porto to a 3-1 win over Fenerbahce in Group G.
Porto top the group with three points with Arsenal and Dynamo Kiev who drew 1-1, sharing second spot.
Striker Lisandro Lopez put Porto in front with an unstoppable 11th minute shot inside the area after a cross from the left by midfielder Raul Meireles.
Two minutes later Lucho Gonzalez was set up by Uruguyan winger Cristian Rodriguez and doubled the lead.
Spanish striker Daniel Guiza reduced the deficit for Fenerbahce when he tapped in a rebound after Porto's Helton failed to clear a header by Brazilian Alex after 29 minutes.
Substitute Lino made the three points safe for Porto with the third goal in the stoppage time.
It is Porto's first win in the opening match of the Champions League for five seasons.
"This team managed to break a first-round jinx. We played brilliantly for periods of the match," Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira told Sports TV.
"But we squandered several chances to put the victory beyond doubt."
