The club said Friday in a statement that a scan had revealed torn muscles in the adductor of Ronaldinho's thigh after he was hurt during training a day earlier.
Ronaldinho could miss most of the rest of the Spanish league season, which has eight rounds left.
The two-time Fifa world player of the year has already missed 13 league games, including the past three, due to a series of physical problems.
He has also been accused of a lack of commitment to the club.
Doubts about Ronaldinho's future at Barcelona have grown all season with reports linking the Brazil international to AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester United.
The buy-out clause attached to Ronaldinho's contract, which runs to 2010, is $194 million.
But his brother and agent, Roberto De Assis, is reportedly threatening to invoke a Fifa transfer clause that allows a player to end his contract after three years at a club.
This would allow Ronaldinho to leave for a much lower fee, reportedly $25 million.
Ronaldinho joined Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003 and helped the club win the Champions League in 2006 and Spanish league titles in 2005 and '06.
The Catalan team is currently third in the league with 58 points, seven behind leader Real Madrid.
Lacking Ronaldinho, Barcelona won 1-0 at Schalke in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday.
