English Premier League club Chelsea have agreed to sign Brazilian right back Juliano Belletti from Spanish side Barcelona.

The 31 year old, best known for scoring the winning goal for Barcelona against Arsenal in the 2006 Champions League final, will now fly to London to discuss personal terms with the Blues and take a medical examination.
Chelsea's pursuit of Belletti suggests the club has been unsuccessful in its pursuit to sign Daniel Alves from Sevilla.

The big spending Londoners had chased Alves for several months and the player said he wanted to move, but the clubs could not reach agreement over a transfer.

Belletti played for Cruzeiro, Sao Paulo, Atletico Mineiro and Villarreal before joining Barcelona in 2004.

He was a 71st-minute substitute in the 2006 Champions League final against Arsenal at Stade de France and scored 10 minutes later, taking a pass from Henrik Larsson on the right of the penalty area and shooting past substitute goalkeeper Manuel Almunia.

Wenger set to stay a Gunner

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is set to end speculation regarding his future and renew his contract.

"We'll have something to say in the next week or so," Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood was quoted as saying in the English tabloid The Daily Star.

"The length of the contract is up to him, but hopefully it will be a two or three-year deal.

"We certainly want to pay him what he's worth, but money is not the major stumbling block, there are just little pieces here and there to sort out."

The Frenchman's current contract expires at the end of this season.

Reports had suggested Wenger's future at the club was uncertain after the departure of vice chairman David Dein in April.

Dein had a close relationship with Wenger since bringing him to the club from Japanese club Grampus Eight and had disagreed with other directors about a possible takeover by American billionaire Stan Kroenke.

The Wenger revolution

Wenger revolutionised diet, training regimes and the global scouting network at Arsenal, and is credited with transforming the club from a dour side into one of the most attractive sides to watch.

Arsenal won the Premier League title and FA Cup in Wenger's first full season.

Wenger added a second "Double" in 2001-02, and in '04 won the league title without Arsenal losing a game.
