Giro d'Italia champion Ivan Basso has faced a hearing before the Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping commission that could lead to a suspension.
Basso was charged with using or attempting to use a banned doping substance or method after sports authorities reopened an investigation into his alleged role in a Spanish doping scandal.
Basso quit the Discovery Channel team on Monday and has already ruled out defending his title at the Giro, which begins May 12.
Michele Scarponi of the Acqua & Sapone team said he was willing to submit to a DNA test after a similar hearing Wednesday.
"I made myself available for a DNA test. They wanted a clarification and
I said everything I know," Scarponi said.
"Now I'm going to get back on my bike and start thinking about races again. There are very few days before the Giro."
Scarponi said his participation in the Giro was up to his team.
"If he's not charged how can I stop him? If he were charged then I could
suspend him," said Acqua & Sapone team manager Palmiro Masciarelli.
Both riders have been linked to the "Operation Puerto" investigation,
which led to Basso's exclusion from last year's Tour de France.
Basso's name turned up on a list of cyclists who allegedly had contact with a Spanish doctor accused of running a blood doping clinic in Madrid.
Basso was cleared of involvement by CONI and the Italian cycling federation in October.
However, CONI doping investigators reportedly have obtained bags suspected to contain his blood from Spain and want to compare them with his DNA.
Both riders have denied doping.
