A mark of respect and possible problems have seen the cancellation of the Beirut International Marathon

The Beirut International Marathon has been postponed because of the assassination of Pierre Gemayel.

The prominent cabinet minister, an anti-Syrian politician, was killed Tuesday in a suburb of Beirut.

"We are just postponing, not cancelling the marathon," marathon spokeswoman Zeina Dacache told reporters.

"He (Gemayel) was a good leader and it would be wrong for us to be seen celebrating our event. But we plan going ahead with it at a future date."
