Watch part two
People in the US are obsessed about immigration. It is one of the hottest political topics during an election season.
Many fear that the country can't support all those migrants pouring over its Southern border.
But in one quiet corner of the country, hugging the corner with Canada there is the fear of just the opposite. The state of North Dakota is getting old and empty.
Far from the burgeoning crowds of US cities lies the still open prairie of North Dakota. New families are welcome here but it is lonely out there.
In the last decade less than 10 per cent of the state reported any population growth or any growth at all.
We travelled to the northwest corner of the state to see what they were doing to reverse this rising tide of depopulation.
Some communities come up with unique ways to attract new residents. We found everything from cities loring prospects with an offer of free land to towns actually paying families to move there from other parts of the country.
All of these are a last-ditch effort to prevent their community from becoming a ghost town.
