US General Michael Flynn, an adviser to Donald Trump, says the US Republican presidential nominee is the kind of leader the country needs.

When asked about the reported inaccuracy of some of Donald Trump's statements, the former US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) chief, who served under President Barack Obama, says the nominee is "very straightforward and very honest".

"Donald Trump will use good common sense and practical solutions," Flynn tells Mehdi Hasan at the Republican National Convention.

Mehdi Hasan also challenges Flynn on his use of the phrase "Islamic ideology sick". After the tragic attack in Nice, Flynn tweeted: "I dare Arab & Persian world 'leaders' to step up to the plate and declare their Islamic ideology sick and must [be] healed."

Flynn defends his remarks, saying leaders within the Muslim-majority world need to do more and "stand up".
