Angel Gurria, secretary general of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development  and former Mexican foreign minister, says the word "racist" can be applied to Donald Trump.

When asked about the presumptive US Republican presidential candidate's controversial statements calling Mexican immigrants "rapists", Gurria tells UpFront's Mehdi Hasan: "I would tend to agree with those who say that this is not only misinformed, but yes, I think the word racist can be applied.

"I think that because the American public is wise, it will then act in consequence," Gurria adds.

The OECD chief also calls Trump's plans to build a wall on the US-Mexico border and have Mexico pay for it a "rather crazy idea".

"It's not going to happen. Period," Gurria says.

More from Mehdi Hasan's wider interview with Gurria, in which they discuss the possible effects of Brexit on the global economy, inequality, and the OECD's new 2016 Survey on the US Economy, will be available Friday, June 17 at 1930GMT.
