Watch part two

The most recent conflict in Congo began 12 years ago when Rwanda and Uganda backed the rebels who were seeking to remove Laurent Kabila, the then president.

Since January of this year, aid organisations say there has been a surge in violence against civilians as a result of Congolese operations against Rwandan Hutu rebels.

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, who is on a trip to several African nations, said the US is committed to ending rape as a weapon of war.

Anand Naidoo is sitting in for Riz Khan this week. On Wednesday's show, Anand speaks with Kambale Musavuli, the national spokesperson for the US-based advocacy group Friends of the Congo, and Muadi Mukenge, the regional director for sub-Saharan Africa at the Global Fund for Women.

This episode of the Riz Khan show aired from Wednesday, August 12, 2009.
