Riz Khan
Europe's right turn
Do recent European election results reflect the will of the people or voter apathy?
Last Modified: 17 Jun 2009 07:18 GMT

Watch part two

The recent European elections showed a marked shift to the right, with centre-right parties strengthening their hold on power.

Far-right parties, including Britain's BNP, also made significant gains - but so did far-left fringe groups such as the Greens.

What is behind these developments? Is it a true indication of the will of the people – or has the electorate simply become more apathetic?

Voter turnout for EU elections has continued to drop and is now at its lowest-ever level.

On Tuesday's Riz Khan show we speak with British Labour and Conservative members of parliament, as well as a Dutch minister to get their views on the issue.

This episode of the Riz Khan show aired from Tuesday, June 16, 2009.
