On Friday, the UN security council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unimpeded provision across the territory of food, fuel and medical treatment, and intensified international arrangements to prevent arms and ammunition smuggling.

But the resolution has been ignored, and Israeli forces continued their ground offensive into Palestinian population centers.

On the 17th day of the assault, the death toll stood at almost 900 Palestinians and 13 Israelis.

On Monday Riz speaks with Richard Falk, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories.

Falk, a professor of international law at Princeton university, was denied entry into Israel upon arrival last month, before the war on Gaza started. He was detained and then expelled.

Falk has argued that the war on Gaza has revealed the United Nations to be "impotent when its main members deprive it of the political will to protect a people subject to unlawful uses of force on a large scale."
