Mexican officials have defended the training methods [EPA] Last week videos emerged of Mexican police being taught torture training methods by a US security firm instructor. In one video a man was pulled through his own vomit, in another a man is subjected to carbonated water being shot up his nose.Human rights organisations are outraged but local officials are defending the training saying that their police need aggressive training methods to confront the threat of drug cartels that have been responsible for over a thousand killings already this year. These videos became public just days after the US Congress signed a $1.6 billion aid package to Mexico that included conditions for human rights. On Tuesday Riz Khan speaks to Laura Carlsen of the Center for International Policy and Tamara Taraciuk, a lawyer for Human Rights Watch on the implications of these videos and impact it may have on the Merida Initiative.
