A debate rages in Washington over whether the US 'surge' in Iraq is working or not.

Some experts and politicians believe the extra 30,000 US troops deployed in Iraq this year have made progress in stabilising the country. They argue that it has provided more security, with fewer sectarian killings and suicide bombings.

Others say the military tactic mainly aims to help the Bush administration to counter public pressure for a withdrawal from Iraq.

On Wednesday we speak with former Iraqi government spokesman Dr. Laith Kubba for his perspective on what is going on in both Washington and Baghdad.
