A hip-hop artist making conscientious music that engages the brain, booty and soul? That’s Michael Franti of Spearhead who joins our program to discuss his latest album Yell Fire and his recent documentary I Am Not Alone.
Franti, who has gained worldwide success mostly by word of mouth, eschews the major recording labels opting instead for independence and the ability to make music that raises the spirit and sends a message of peace and understanding.

It was to gain a better understanding that he undertook his most recent endeavour. Armed with only a guitar and cameraman, he went to Iraq, the West Bank, Gaza and Israel to investigate, first-hand, the human costs of war. We’ll talk to this singer and activist about what he found.
