The Secret State
Transnistria, part of Moldova, is a breakaway state that only Russia recognises.

Watch part two

This 'rogue state' dubbed Europe's Cuba is just 4165 square kilometres of land lying between the borders of Europe and Ukraine. It is a breakaway region, like South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which declared its independence from Moldova in 1990.

Transnistria has its own money, stamps and passports, which are unrecognised by anyone else and useless outside its borders. They choose to follow their own direction and consider the rest of the world their enemy.

Revenue is largely derived from criminal activity, including weapons smuggling and woman trafficking, crimes which go unpunished by corrupt authorities.

Many secrets are hidden within the borders of Transnistria, and that is the way they like it.

A team of documentary makers, Peter Tetteroo, Cornelis van der Jagt and cinematographer Ruud Denslagen entered Transnistria on the pretence of filming a military parade, and discovered that once inside the border secrets are not hard to uncover.

This episode of People & Power aired from Saturday, September 6, 2008.
