Dr Kaliti: ‘You have to pick up lives’

Meet the doctor working tirelessly to aid mothers and babies in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Dr Kaliti is the only full-time obstetrician at the Bwaila Maternity Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi.

With around 50 babies being delivered every day, the specialised care he can provide is often a matter of life and death for the mothers and babies who arrive at the hopsital.

“You have to pick up lives and put them together in a whole 24-hour cycle. So you want to sleep, but the reward of saving lives is too strong,” he says.

Dr Kaliti is one of the many health heroes profiled in Lifelines: The Quest for Global Health

Lifelines: The Quest for Global Health profiles the extraordinary work of global health workers in their quest to rid the world of the deadly neglected diseases and conditions that keep millions of people in poverty.
