Inside Story
Embattled but defiant
A former member of Gaddafi's closest circle gives an insight into the Libyan leader's state of mind.
Last Modified: 24 Feb 2011 13:11 GMT

Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, has apparently set the stage for a violent, final showdown to crush ongoing protests against his rule across Libya.

In a ranting speech, Gaddafi said he had not ordered the use of force yet, but if he does Libya will burn. He has also threatened to turn Libya into what he called another Somalia should his regime fall.

Is he just a desperate leader feeling betrayed? What does this say about his state of mind as he fights for his future?

Inside Story, with presenter Imran Garda, discusses with a former member of Gaddafi's inner circle, Nouri al-Masmari, the former head of Muammar Gaddafi's protocol. Also joining us on the programme is Mohammed al-Abdalla, the deputy secretary-general of the National front for Salvation of Libya.

This episode of Inside Story aired from Wednesday, February 23, 2011.
