Creating a Palestinian state?
Israel, the US and the PA have reportedly discussed plans to establish a temporary state.

Israeli politicians are reportedly setting out their ideas for the creation of a Palestinian state.

This move comes after the Palestinian Authority (PA) suggested asking the UN to recognise the Occupied Territories as an independent Palestinian state.

Information leaked to the press last week said that Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, had been talking to the US, the PA and other Arab leaders about the plan and that it would include the establishment of a temporary Palestinian state in the West Bank.

Eventually that state would cover an area equivalent to that of the West Bank and Gaza before the 1967 war.

But is this just an attempt to buy time and draw attention away from the stalled peace process? Should the Palestinians accept the proposal as a step towards their ultimate goal?

This episode of Inside Story aired from Monday, November 22, 2009.
