The world waits to see who will replace Fidel Castro

As Fidel Castro relinquishes power after almost 50 years, the world waits to see who will replace him.

Prime candidate is his brother Raul, who has held the reins of communist Cuba for the last 19 months during the president’s prolonged illness.

But it is possible the country’s national assembly – due to choose Fidel’s successor on Sunday – will opt for a new generation of leaders. Whoever takes on his mantle, will face renewed international calls to embrace democracy and a free market economy.

What is next for Cuba, and is the island destined to escape its decades in isolation?

Inside Story, with presenter Hashem Ahelbarra, explores the political rhythms.
