Manmohan Singh, the Indian prime minister, has stressed the need for increased trade ties with China on the second day of his official visit to the country.

Between them they account for a third of the world's people. India and China share a border and have multi-billion dollar trade links. But there are simmering tensions.
 
Now as India's prime minister visits Beijing, Inside Story asks if the two sides can put aside their differences and become the major powers of the 21st century. And who do they need on their side to do that?
