This evening’s Inside Story looks at the annual conference of Egypts ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which ended with a few surprises but no leadership reshuffle.

Hosni Mubarak, the 79-year-old Egyptian president, was re-elected as party head and urged his government to do more to help the country’s poor. That has been a promise frequently made during past conferences, but can he deliver results?

There had been speculation that the congress would elevate the president’s son, Gamal Mubarak, to head the party. That did not happen, but an obvious rift between the old guard and the emerging young leaders in the party’s policy committee is taking place.
