Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, is meeting Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, in the West Bank with a view to opening talks on "broad principles" for establishing a Palestinian state.

It is the first time the two leaders have met in Palestinian territory, and comes ahead of a conference in November orchestrated by the US.
