Mattel, the world's biggest toy maker, has ordered an urgent recall of some 18 million toys made in China amid fears that they could be harmful to children.

It is the latest in a series of scares involving Chinese-made products - ranging from foodstuffs to medicines – around the world.

While consumer watchdogs in the West are on ready alert, what happens in countries where citizens have few laws, or rights, to protect them?
