The Arab League is to send envoys to Israel for the very first time to discuss proposals for an Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative.

It comes as Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, receives vocal support from the West after the violent takeover of Gaza by Hamas.

But what does this support actually entail, and will it win – or lose – backing for Abbas and his Fatah party at home?
