An alternative approach to Iran?

Iran's nuclear issue seems to be taking a new turn.

IAEA said Iran is probably between three and eight years away from producing a nuclear weapon if it decided to take that route.

And while Tehran vows that it will not halt its nuclear programme, the West is threatening tougher sanctions.

Amidst this mounting tension, the director general of the IAEA, Mohammed El Baradei, has suggested allowing Iran to engage in limited enrichment under severe inspection.

So, could this idea be an alternative to sanctions and war? What implications would the tension have on the Gulf region?
