The 9th of April marks the fourth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad.

Four years on and the violence which has killed thousands of Iraqis continues unabated.

The number of deaths, both among Iraqi civilians and coalition soldiers, has risen in recent months in spite of – or perhaps because of – the recent US troop reinforcements.

Critics say Iraq must be free of US occupation before stability returns to Baghdad.

On the other hand, Iraq's political leaders want the Americans to stay until the Iraqi army is capable of curbing the violence. They have called for a coalition of moderates and nationalists to drive out the militants.

In this special edition of Inside Iraq, we go one-on-one with Tariq al-Hashimi, the Iraqi vice-president, to look at the complex issues facing Iraq and its future.

This episode of Inside Iraq aired from 09 April 2007
