Anne-Marie Slaughter is the president of the New America Foundation and a former US state department official.

From 2002 to 2009, Slaughter was the dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and she has been the director of the International Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School.

Slaughter is the first woman to become the director of policy planning for the state department, a position which she held from 2009 to 2011.

She has written or edited six books and is a contributing editor at The Atlantic. She wrote the magazine’s most read article - Why Women Still Can’t Have it All.

Slaughter spoke to Empire about the situation in Syria and the US' place in the world.
