Steven Simon is the executive director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS-US) and the corresponding director of IISS-Middle East. Until recently, he served as a member of the White House's national security staff. He is an expert on US foreign policy and security in the Middle East and North Africa, and has taught security studies at Georgetown University. Simon has co-authored a number of books; his most recent, written with Dana Allin, is The Sixth Crisis: Iran, Israel, America and the Rumors of War (2010).
Dr. Khalil al-Anani is an expert on Islamist movements, Egyptian politics, democratisation in the Middle East and US foreign policy. He is a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute and the author of a number of books published in Arabic and English. His forthcoming titles are Unpacking the Muslim Brotherhood: Religion, Identity, and Politics and Elections and Democratization in the Middle East.
Marina Ottaway is a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center and an expert on the political transformations in the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. Her current project focuses on the Arab Spring countries and Iraq. Prior to joining the Wilson Center in 2013, she spent 14 years with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She has taught at six universities including Georgetown University, the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies, and the American University in Cairo. She has authored and edited books including her most recent co-edited work, Yemen on the Brink (2010).
Bob Dreyfuss is an independent, investigative journalist who specialises in politics and national security. He is a contributing editor at The Nation magazine and has contributed to a number of leading US magazines. He is the author of Devil’s Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam (2005).

General Michael V. Hayden served as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) between 2006 and 2009, prior to which he worked as the director of the National Security Agency (NSA) between 1999 and 2005), roles which saw him lead much of the US' counter-terrorism efforts. He is a retired air force four-star general who spent nearly 40 years in the US military. He is currently a principal at the security consultancy Chertoff Group and a distinguished visiting professor at George Mason University.
