Bollywood Pirates

101 East looks at the effects of piracy and counterfeiting on India’s film industry.

Watch part two

Bollywood produces more films than any other film industry in the world.

But the Indian entertainment industry loses 500,000 jobs and nearly $1bn in revenue annually due to film piracy and counterfeiting.

Film piracy is a low-risk and high-yield business for organised crime syndicates in India and many in Bollywood blame it on weak law enforcement.

Indian authorities are cracking down on piracy but say more needs to be done from within the industry.

On this edition of 101 East, we look at the darker side of glamorous Bollywood.

Presenter Fauziah Ibrahim is joined by guests T.P. Aggarwal from the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association, Hiren Gada, the CEO of Shemaroo Entertainment, and Mayank Shekhar, a cultural editor for the Hindustan Times newspaper.
