Watch part two

Malaysia's Internal Security Act (ISA) has long been a controversial issue.

The legislation, introduced shortly after independence from British colonial rule, is used to detain suspects who are deemed a threat to national security.

The government defends the continued use of the ISA, saying it is necessary to protect citizens from potential terrorist acts.

But critics say past Malaysian leaders have used the act as a subversive tool to suppress any political opposition.

101 East with presenter Fauziah Ibrahim looks at how the law will evolve under Najib Razak, the new prime minister, with guests: Zaid Ibrahim, the leader of People's Justice Party (PKR), Khairy Jamaluddin, a Malaysian government MP, and Denison Jayasooria from the National University of Malaysia.
