The Maldives, once a fishing village, are now better known as a high-end tropical island paradise.

Under President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom – Asia's longest serving leader – this is South Asia's richest country.

But he is fighting the political battle of his life, in the run-off of the Maldives' first multi-party presidential elections.

His opponent, Mohamed Nasheed, a former political prisoner under his regime, has united the opposition to spearhead a stiff challenge to topple him.

In this edition of 101 East, we look at this turning point of democracy in Maldivian history and ask both presidential candidates why Maldivians should vote for them.
