Where is Ethiopia’s Tigray war headed?

Ethiopia’s grinding war
Fighting has ravaged Ethiopia’s Tigray region for nine months after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent troops in to bring down the region’s then-ruling party the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Last month, though, the war took a stunning turn when pro-TPLF forces retook regional capital Mekele. The TPLF has now pressed its battlefield success and launched an offensive against forces from the neighbouring Amhara region, who have occupied land in Tigray. The Amhara regional government says the land was previously taken illegally by Tigray.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi was last week given access to the Amhara/Tigray border region and spoke to Fanta Mandefro, deputy president of the Amhara region. In this segment, we speak to Soi to hear what she discovered on her trip.

Europe’s flooding crisis
More than 100 people are dead and thousands missing in heavy flooding that has hit Germany. Thousands have been evacuated with more rainfall expected and fear of dams collapsing. In neighboring Belgium, several dozen people have died. Rain has been falling in Germany at levels not seen in summer for 100 years and the flooding has prompted calls for action against climate change. The European Union last week announced plans to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to at least 55 percent lower than 1990 levels within less than a decade.

Mexico’s kill zone
Michoacan state is an epicentre of Mexico’s cartel war. The Jalisco New Generation cartel has been battling for control of the region with rival cartels and government forces and, in the process, often closes off main roads and lays siege to towns, trapping a terrified population between all sides. Drug-related violence has killed more than 300,000 people in Mexico since 2006.

Al Jazeera’s John Holman spent a month travelling in Michoacan state to find out more about the so-called kill zones. In this segment, he shares his experiences reporting from the region and speaking to those most affected.
