Al Jazeera has announced its coverage plan for the Venezuelan election. The presidential election takes place a month after the death of Hugo Chavez. His chosen successor Nicolas Maduro has vowed to honour the late president’s socialist legacy. However, he could face a strong challenge from opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.
Three TV correspondents and one online reporter will provide viewers with in-depth reporting and analysis from across the country before, during, and after polling day.
Al Jazeera ‘s Lucia Newman, Gabriel Elizondo and Teresa Bo will be reporting from the capital Caracas from Thursday 11th April when the campaign ends. Al Jazeera English online will also provide the latest analysis and coverage through a special spotlight page carrying exclusive features and reports from Al Jazeera’s Christopher Arsenault.
The Al Jazeera team will highlight key electoral issues such as the legacy of Chavez, the growing number of young people, land rights, the rise in crime and the importance of the Church and its role in Venezuelan politics.
Al Jazeera will provide live coverage on Sunday 14th April when the results of the election is to be announced.
