Many demonstrators said they planned peaceful protests, but a group of about 1,000 "particularly violent" rioters clashed with police, smashing windows and ransacking shops [AFP]
About a dozen people were reported injured in a series of clashes that lasted until the late afternoon [AFP]
Some protesters set fire to a former customs station and an Ibis hotel, which were gutted before fire services were able to put them out [AFP]
Protest organisers said the majority of demonstrators did not aim to carry out violence and blamed tensions on security forces [AFP]
