Video: Final Shalit deal uncertain
Deal to free Shalit elusive despite video and Palestinian prisoner releases.
Last Modified: 02 Oct 2009 18:20 GMT

For the first time since his capture three years ago, footage of the Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, has been handed over to his family and the Israeli authorities.

The two-minute video shows 23-year-old Shalit apparently healthy and speaking to the camera.

The video recording was made in exchange for the release of 20 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails - part of a deal brokered by Egyptian and German mediators.

While both Palestinian and Israeli leaders have viewed this confidence-building measure favorably, no one is willing to come out and say that a final prisoner exchange deal is imminent.

Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Jerusalem.
