About 80 people drowned off the coast of Yemen after their boat sank while trying to cross from Somalia to the Arab state, a Yemeni official has said.

Some 45 others, most of them of Somali origin, survived after the vessel, carrying an estimated 126 immigrants, submerged near the eastern coast of Yemen late on Thursday, the official said.
Rescuers and fishermen pulled 27 bodies from the sea, the official said on Friday.

The survivors were handed over to officials of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Many African migrants cross into Yemen, a state they see as a gateway to other parts of the Middle East and the West.

Last week, 65 people, including three children, drowned in the Gulf of Aden while trying to cross from Somalia to Yemen.
