Israeli soldiers have shot and killed a Palestinian man in a gunbattle that broke out after they entered a West Bank refugee camp.
Palestinian medics and security sources said that the man died in the Askar refugee camp near the city of Nablus early on Wednesday morning.
The Israelis had been exchanging fire with members of the Fatah movement when the man, Saadi Abu Kisheq, was shot.
Palestinian medics said that the 22-year old was apparently unarmed and not involved in the gun battle.
The Israeli military however said that the man was armed and had fired on their troops.
"The soldiers spotted a gunman opening fire at them and shot at him, hitting him," an Israeli army spokeswoman said.
Israeli forces launched the raid before dawn and arrested six wanted men, Palestinian security sources said.
Nablus and the refugee camps nearby are known as a centre of armed opposition to Israel.
